We are having a cycling themed week with some special activities organised in partnership with ‘Mums for Lungs’, the ‘Bike Bus’ group and ‘Bikes Love You’.
DESIGN A BICYCLE HELMET COMPETITION
As part of the Cycle and Scoot to School Week (Monday 13th to Friday 17th October), we are holding a Design a Bicycle Helmet competition. The blank bicycle helmets will be given out today and the closing date will be next Thursday. 16th October. The Eco Team will choose two winners and they will be announced in assembly on Friday 17th October. Prizes have been donated by ‘Bikes Love You’, the bike repair shop on Haydn Road.
DR BIKE WORKSHOPS - TUESDAY 14TH AND THURSDAY 16TH 8.30AM-9.45AM
Parents can bring along child and adult bikes for a free safety check and minor repairs and will be held on the Key Stage 2 playground.
CHEEKY TUESDAY FOR CHILDREN IN YEAR 1 TO YEAR 6
Next Tuesday 14th October, we are having a ‘Cheeky Tuesday’ where your child in Year 1 to Year 6 can choose from the options below. These are all a little bit ‘cheeky’ because they are things that we wouldn’t usually allow on a normal Haydn school day. On this occasion, children can bring a cash donation to school and can choose one or all of the options. Please do not bring items that are of sentimental or monetary value as school cannot be responsible for any items that go astray. Please see the list of choices below:

BRING A BULB DAY - THURSDAY 16TH OCTOBER AT 3.15PM
We continue with our pledge to make the school grounds a haven for wildlife. In order to support bumblebees and other pollinators, we need to provide nectar-rich plants for as much of the year as possible. Planting spring bulbs is a perfect way of doing this!
Our site manager, Mr Shaw, has been busy making raised beds from upcycled materials. We are adding these into an underused 'grey' space in school where the gardening club created a small bumblebee garden last summer. Bring in your bulbs next Thursday after school and help to make this space a greener space for wildlife and for everyone! Also, could we ask parents and carers to bring along a trowel if you have one. We look forward to seeing you there!
HARVEST FESTIVAL COLLECTION
Next week, we are collecting food items for the Harvest Festival. We are looking for donations of the following items: tinned and dried goods, such as vegetables, fruits, meat, pasta, rice, and cereal, as well as long-life milk and juice. Other non-perishable items, such as toiletries and cooking sauces, are also appreciated. Items can be dropped off at school from Monday to Thursday next week. We will be dropping off the donations at Arnold Foodbank next Friday 17th October.
YEAR 1 ‘FRUITY FAMILY FEAST’
Year 1 had a wonderful time at their ’Fruity Family Feast’ afternoon on Tuesday. We welcomed lots of grandparents and special family members and loved having the opportunity to learn more about our family histories and things that have changed over time. We even welcomed an ex Haydn pupil with a school report and photograph from 1952! The children proudly shared the delicious fruit kebabs they made in their DT unit on food and healthy eating - it was a wonderful event for all. Thank you to all who attended this special event.
SECONDARY SCHOOL APPLICATIONS
Please note that the deadline for your application for your child’s secondary school is 31st October 2025. Please visit: www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/admissions to submit your application.

READING, READING, READING
October is Black History Month in the UK, when we seek to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Black people to British society and globally. The theme for Black History Month 2025 is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, which recognises the strength and resilience of Black communities worldwide.
There are many beautiful books and we love ‘The Little Leaders’ series.
Featuring 40 trailblazing black women in the world's history, this book educates and inspires, as it relates to true stories of women who broke boundaries and exceeded all expectations.
Debut author/illustrator Vashti Harrison pairs captivating text with stunning illustrations as she tells the stories of both iconic and lesser-known female figures of black history, including: Nurse Mary Seacole, Politician Diane Abbott, Mathematician Katherine Johnson.
Inspire your own little leader with the stories of these amazing women.
